I attended the last stop the hate session of the semeser, “Stop The Hate Today” this past Wednesday!
We first talked a little bit about the Pyramid of Hate, shown here.
If there was a stack of cups and you were trying to knock it over by throwing a ball, the best place to hit it would be on the base. In the same way, the best way to knock down the pyramid of hate is to look at ways to stop acts of bias, predijice and bigotry. These are acts such as name calling, steryotyping, rumors, accepting the negative information and screening out the positive and even joking around What are some ways of doing stopping these acts? This is exactly what Wednesdays session was all about. One of the easiest ways to help is to stand up and say something if you see/hear anything! Its is important to check and see if the victim is alright. It is also important to take time for the perpetrators to educate them and let them know what they did/said was wrong and why. All in all we discussed 10 ways to stop the hate and they can be see here.
I used this quote recently on a bulletin board but I really like it and I think it applies here too. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” -Dr. Seuss.
If we don’t stand up and say something when the acts of hate are at the lowest level of the pyramid, they will only get worse. It’s time to stand up and say something if you see something!
