Hey there 4 South!!
I’d like to give everyone a quick recap of what the Chancellor had to say during the forum this evening. Chancellor Shields opened the floor to any questions that we as students could come up with, and a variety of topics were covered. We talked about the funding of our school, the outlook on our future, what buildings we could see in the future, what makes Rountree different from other Residence halls, and the Chancellor’s history as well.
A student posed the question on how the university is handling budget cuts and the correlation to how classes are offered. Shields spoke about how the university looks to the data to help make decisions in regards to programs offered and classes offered. Due to the major budget cuts in the recent years many programs have face cutting the amount of classes offered and how the department is funded. Given a new prospect, where the state may offer more funding, the university would look to use that money strategically. For the future, Shield’s explained that he would like to see a new engineering building constructed, along with much needed renovations of such buildings as Boebel. Then the Chancellor explained strategic prospects that may be utilized to speed up the building of new residence halls. The construction of Rountree was a first of its kind, as the funding did not come from the state. What that means is our building could be constructed faster and not have to weed through all of the red tape a regular residence hall would usually go through. The foundation that came together allowed UWP to offer a building such as Rountree in so little time because in truth it is funded by us, the residence. Shields explained that he would like to see more housing like ours offered on campus, that way the University may focus on the more important task of offering students the education they deserve. Now, he also stated traditional halls would not go away as they offer a great lower cost option to students who need them.
In the end the Chancellor talked about his past and where he was able to find his motivation to work hard in his life to get to his position today. Chancellor Shields is an orphan who moved from foster home to foster home, along with into boys homes as well. Through determination, and the help of those who influenced him, Chancellor Shields has been able to attain the goals that he has set out on. When asked what motivates him each day, he answered that it was the thought of helping us, the students, to gain the knowledge we need to become successful in our lives as well.
